A Hi Amanda
Thanks for your question. If you go to [http://oceanlink.island.net] you will find an excllent article on the contributions of marine biology to society.
This site also has many interviews with marine biologists. We also have a lot of information on Marine Careers at
[http://www.mesa.edu.au/careers]
Regarding the wearing of uniforms, this really depends on who you are working for and what you are doing.
For example, if you are a (Marine) Parks ranger you may need to wear a uniform at certain times especially when working with the public.
If you work in a laboratory you will probably be wearing the traditional white coat. In the field you would wear what is comfortable and provides protection, if you are lucky you may even be wearing a wetsuit and be at work!
I hope this helps
cheers
