For six years a group of Eden residents has discussed the idea of establishing a Discovery Centre that would demonstrate the beauty and complexity of Twofold Bay and the coastal environment, and its top sea mammals, the whales that come close on their migrations.

Now the idea of the Centre has been explored, it is clear that people want a Centre that will not only be an exciting visitor centre, but which will also have as its purpose serious research into many aspects of the marine coastal environment, and the use of that research and networks of information, to offer educational experiences and new understanding to people of all ages and levels of interest.

The Eden Whale & Marine Discovery Centre will be an integrated Marine Centre comprising a Research facility (both pure and applied), an Education facility (for all ages and levels of interest) and a Visitor Centre. The Marine Centre group are currently lobbying government on all levels in order to purchase the recently decommissioned BP oil storage depot in Eden, which is ideally located in close proximity to the Snug Cove wharf area, where much of Eden’s fishing activities are located.

The Vision of the Eden Whale & Marine Discovery Centre – within 10 years it will:

  • be regarded one of the world’s best visitor destination for those interested in whales and the marine environment
  • be a centre of excellence for resource, research, information and specialist knowledge of the marine environment and the factors affecting its wellbeing
  • offer unparalleled educational opportunities for people of all ages and levels of study and for teacher development in the area of marine studies
  • be a focus for the local community, engaging the interest of people of all ages in their wonderful location. Their Centre will be used by them for recreation and learning and will bring together different interest groups in support of a sustainable future
encompass the local Aboriginal communities’ role in the stewardship of the marine environment

The Purpose of the EWMD Centre – what we exist for:

  • To encourage wide interest in, and understanding of the local marine and coastal environment and Eden’s global significance as a whale haven
  • To provide leadership in the sensitive and sustainable use of the marine environment and demonstrate stewardship of the sea for future generations.
