After five years of boat building in Melbourne Docklands, her Patron, Andrew Denton, launched Pelican1 in 2004. The boat was the idea of a group of people who were determined to create inspirational projects at sea. For more info about Pelican1 follow this link www.svpelican.com.au/pages/vessel.html

Pelican1 had an exiting and challenging first two years of operation. In her first year, Pelican1 completed her sea trials by taking part in Blue and Sperm Whale research off Portland in Victoria.

The boat then had a complete workout by circumnavigating Australia. We have developed a strong link with the Hope Vale Aboriginal community in Cape York and completed a major project there in September 2005. She has also worked on an ABC documentary about Blue Whales.

Now, we would like you to “Come Aboard!” Pelican1 as she embarks on a project with the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA).

Pelican1 is sailing from Bundaberg on March 6, 2006 on a five week Monitoring and Management survey of the Great Barrier Reef.

You won’t be able to fit on board as the boat will be full of scientists, Indigenous trainees, crew and a few floating visitors, but you will be able to take part through our Live at Sea classroom and link to our Pelican Brain. (The Pelican Brain will be linked to our website.)

Have you ever thought about what life as a marine scientist might be like? Or being the Skipper? Or being the cook on board a busy boat?

You will be able to ask a question directly to the Indigenous trainees, the scientists or the crew to find out about life at sea. You will also be able to learn about the amazing Barrier Reef and to understand the dangers that this beautiful place faces and learn about ways that you can help to look after it.

This has a strong connection with the themes of “Seaweek” as we hope to help identify ways to live with the reef in a sustainable way.

We will be updating the site daily and be able to answer all questions posted to our website.

All of the Great Barrier Reef is “sea country” to different Indigenous people along the coast. Pelican1 will be travelling through this different “sea country” and you can learn about some of the Indigenous knowledge intrinsic to the region.
