Marine Discovery Centre, Bondi Beach

Email: marinediscovery@bigpond.com
Web-site: www.marinediscovery.org.au

Imagine the magical underwater world of Bondi Bay accessible to all - a cross between an aquarium, a museum and an educational video game arcade – this will be an exciting new Edu-tainment facility for southern Sydney.

With beachfront space in the iconic Bondi Pavilion, we are creating a ‘total immersion experience’, giving a fishes’ eye-view of our temperate marine environments; and what it ‘feels’ like to be impacted upon by humans. A fun and educational experience, the Centre is set to deliver genuine conservation outcomes for our marine environment – sustainable living is the key to maintaining our famous coastal lifestyle!

The educational ethos of the Centre will be based on the very successful Marine Discovery Centre in Queenscliff, Victoria, set up in 1983, together with the best marine educational programs available. Ease of access and contributions from specialist partners will create a ‘community hub’ from which delivery of high quality action-based school & community education can occur.

Sydney’s coastal environments are under intensive pressures (according to the Sydney Regional Coastal Management Strategy), however; “there are insufficient marine nature conservation education programs”. Whilst there is a clear need for effective marine and coastal environmental education, there are sadly no dedicated field centres in the southern Sydney Metro region for school groups or the wider community.

This project is being proposed by the Marine Discovery Centre, Bondi Beach, Organising Group, which is made up of a wide variety of community conservation groups, including; The Australian Marine Conservation Society and Surfrider Foundation; in conjunction with Waverley Council and many other groups: Fisheries NSW, EPA NSW, Sydney Coastal Councils Group, The Nature Conservation Council, The Australian Gould League, La Perouse Aboriginal Lands Council etc.

The Centre will be run as a non-profit eco-business and plans to be self-funding after 18 months.
