FACT SHEETS - HOW WE USE CORAL REEFS
30 COASTAL PROTECTION

• Coral reefs provide safety to populations living by the coast as they limit coastal erosion.

• Coral reefs are natural barriers against storms and destructive waves such as tsunamis.

• Some small island states rely solely on coral reefs to protect them from destructive natural events such as cyclones and Tsunamis. This includes islands in the Pacific and Indian Ocean, such as the Maldives.
