Friday 14th June 2002 marked a very significant day for marine conservation and education with the announcement of the passage of legislation to create the world's first representative system of Marine National Parks and Marine Sanctuaries.

Minister for Conservation and Environment Cheryl Garbutt met with a group of Marine Parks supporters at Point Lonsdale to mark the passage of the National Parks (Marine National Parks and Marine Sanctuaries) Act 2002.

This is a major achievement for Victorians present and future and will result in the establishment of 13 fully protected Marine National Parks and 11 Fully Protected Marine Sanctuaries along the coast of Victoria, resulting in full protection for 5.3% of state coastal waters.

For many of us that have been involved we would like to say a special thankyou to Tim Allen, Marine and Coastal Community Network ( and former education officer at MDC, Queenscliff and Victorian MESA rep) an enormous congratulationsand thankyou for keeping the fight going and continuously providing us with inspiration and strategies.

For those of you outside Victoria please take the time to discuss this with your colleagues and friends. What this announcement demonstrates is that even in the face of often fierce opposition and conflicting views, there is great hope for protecting some of our marine and coastal biodiversity. Let Victoria's examples be inspiration in protecting your own waters.

To find out more have a look at the NRE website at www.nre.vic.gov.au and follwo the links to Marine Parks.

On behalf of the coast, future Victorians and for those of us directly involved in Marine Education and Conservation - to all those that have been involved in the process over the last ten years - a big thankyou and congratulations!!!

Nancy Tsernjavski and Tim Allen, both former MDC Education Officers,
enjoying the moment together.
